Garbage & Recycling Information

Mayor P. Kenneth Hershey and your Borough Council would like to congratulate all of you on a job well done with your recycling efforts. Keep up the good work, and let’s keep improving. To help with our recycling effort, and to continue to improve the appearance of our town, we will continue to sell the recycling cans you see around town. These containers come with lids, and a hot stamped Borough imprint. These containers cost the Borough over $15.00. The Borough will make these available to you, below our cost, at $10.00 each. All curb side pick up of bottles and cans will be from these containers only.

These brochures are only mailed to property owners, if you rent, please see that your tenants get the information. Additional copies of this brochure are available at Borough Hall.

Garbage vs. Recyclables

Anything that can be recycled must be removed from regular garbage. The Borough will pick up some recyclables at curbside, however other items must be brought to the recycling center on your own and still other recyclable materials must be handled privately. The Borough will make every effort to keep you informed of the easiest and least expensive way to dispose of those recyclable items for which you are responsible. You can help save us all money by informing us of any items that you recycle on your own. It will be a tremendous help to the Borough and a great benefit to the community for residents and landlords to transport their own recyclables to the Recycling Center. Businesses, including motels, will not receive curbside pickup and must bring their recyclables to the center.

Garbage Pickup

Garbage pickup starts as early as 4:00am. No garbage or recyclables can be placed at the curb before dark on the night before pickup. Please remove empty cans from the sidewalk as soon after pick-up as possible. All garbage must be put in sturdy cans, no larger than 35 gallon.

Recyclables For Weekly Curbside Pickup

  • NEWSPAPERS – Including comics and advertising inserts. Must be tied with string (no tape, plastic or paper bags) in bundles no more than 12 inches high.
  • MIXED PAPER
  • BRUSH – Includes all tree limbs up to 4″ diameter, leaves, weeds, and other back yard debris. Call for free pickup any time. Must be tied in bundles.
  • ALL SCRAP METAL – Aluminum, copper, steel and aluminum screening. All of these materials must be pure. (For example – no plastic, rubber, or wood casings or frames) Must be in a sturdy, reusable container. Maximum weight: 50 lbs. per container.
  • METAL APPLIANCES AND FURNITURE – Includes bed frames, water heaters, stoves, metal cabinets, etc. – ALL NON-METAL MATERIALS MUST BE REMOVED AND NO REFRIGERATORS OR AIR CONDITIONERS WILL BE ACCEPTED UNLESS FEE IS PAID AND STICKER IS ATTACHED.

  • Clothing
  • Telephone books – Accepted when new books come out.

Recyclables You Must Dispose of Properly

  • USED MOTOR OIL – Place in capped container and take, free of charge, to any service station displaying a “USED OIL RECYCLING” sign.
  • CONSTRUCTION DEBRIS – Include all remodeling debris. Must be handles through the contractor, or by contacting a private removal company.
  • PAINT CANS – Empty cans with no lids can go in with regular garbage. Any paint or other hazardous waste must be saved for the bi-annual household hazardous waste drop-off or taken to the County Facility.

Regular Garbage

The small amount of waste you still have left after proper recycling can be placed at curbside in sturdy, sanitary, reusable containers, no larger than 35 gallons. It is against the law to have ay of the above mentioned recyclables in your regular garbage, or to put your regular garbage out in the cardboard boxes or paper bags. Non-metal furniture, and tires, (on Wed) refrigerators, and air conditioners (on Tues) will all be picked up, but there is a fee of $10.00 per item, $3.00 per tire, that must be paid at the borough hall first. You will then be given a sticker to place on the bulk item(s) to be picked up.

Please keep your property clean and do not allow garbage or furniture to accumulate around the property, or a summons will be issued.
